They say ‘health is wealth’, and nothing could ring more true during such a chaotic year. Now, more than ever, is the time to re-examine how we are taking care of our bodies. With flu season approaching and colder months around the corner, it’s time to give our immune system a boost. A few months ago, I was introduced to sea moss and all its health benefits by my homegirl Monique. I had the chance to interview my girl and her family, and am pleased to introduce ya’ll to Sage’s SeaMoss.

For those of us who are unfamiliar with sea moss, can you tell us about it?
Sure! Sea Moss is a type of seaweed/algae that grows along the coastlines of North America, Europe and the Caribbean Islands. It’s colors range from gold to purple and have a gelatinous texture to it. Now that’s the textbook description. What I grew up knowing about Sea Moss aka Irish Moss was its effect on the male libido, and that is it! Jamaican’s have been consuming it for centuries as a drink/shake if you may, made from sweet milk, nutmeg, vanilla etc.
What are the health benefits of sea moss?
They say with age comes wisdom, the older I got, I began taking my health more seriously and being intentional with what I was putting into my body. I later found out that Sea Moss had way more benefits than just enhancing the male libido. The health benefits are endless (I’m not kidding) – to name a few; Off the bat it’s composed of 92 of the 102 minerals our body consists of. It decreases inflammation, increases blood circulation, rids the body of mucus (which I can attest to), promotes a healthy digestive tract, helps with weight loss by suppressing the appetite, loaded with fiber and is quite the energy booster. Fun fact, it also increases your breastmilk supply.
What inspired you to create Sage’s Sea Moss?
Honestly, this one has to go to my husband Peter, I can’t take much credit. The idea came to him after making a few jars for his friend that was experiencing some health complications (inflammation, really bad sinus infections etc). After seeing how it helped him, Peter got the idea to distribute to others hoping to provide some healing & comfort. It just so happened that all of this took place during COVID-19 and we noticed just how many people were seeking out natural ways to boost their immune system and fight off existing colds. I would say though, my overall passion towards Sea Moss and other naturopathic remedies are all inspired by my 95 year old grandmother. I grew up watching her make tinctures, salves, syrups, you name it! There was always this inclination that whatever I was looking for could always be found in nature. With both Peter and I’s knowledge of nature’s wisdom, we took the leap of faith needed… and here we are, your favorite Sea Moss plug!
In what ways do you include sea moss into your diet?
Me personally, I add it to my morning smoothies – I absolutely love a good smoothie. My husband on the other hand enjoys it straight from the jar or in a cup of natural juice. We put it in our 1 yr olds oatmeal as Sea Moss is great for the whole family! Peter has even made a fertilizer for our plants and they’ve been thriving ever since. You can add Sea Moss into anything. It’s been used as a thickening agent for soups and gravies by the Irish, while many also bake with it. Another way to incorporate Sea Moss into your diet is stirring in a spoon or two into your coffee/tea.
How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
I’m still figuring it out. It’s way harder than I expected. My husband and I tag team and have since worked out a decent action plan that enables us to incorporate Sage into the daily happenings of Sage’s Sea Moss. Whether it’s bringing her to the post office to send off shipments, having her play outside while we sun dry the Sea Moss, or distracting her with a few strands of Sea Moss of her own usually works too lol – we’re getting wiser as time goes on. I give credit to any entrepreneur on the grind because it is hard work balancing a family, business & life! All that to say, we’re slowly formulating our groove and balancing our new lives as we know it. Although said groove means longer nights and earlier mornings, it also affords me the opportunity of being home, catching all the new discoveries, milestones & play time. That alone is priceless!
What motivates you?
At this stage in my life, God’s favor, my husband, Sage, family, friends & my dreams!
Who is your target clientele?
Our target clientele are people seeking to build and maintain a healthier holistic lifestyle.
What does being a ‘Black-owned’ business mean to you?
Being a black owned business means three things to us. Being proud, bold & truthful. Proud to stand as a black man & woman despite the blatant inequalities and injustices. Being bold enough to compete on the battlefield of business, standing firm on our “Yes & No’s” but most importantly remaining true in our business practices.
What do you envision for the brand moving forward?
Moving forward, we envision expanding Sage’s Sea Moss into a holistic eco tourist experience in Jamaica. It’s something we’ve been building on for a few years now. Continuing to grow organically, having a significant impact on the lives of the people we love, and everyone we come into contact with. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that Man Plans and God Laughs, so we won’t limit ourselves when it comes to what we’re capable of doing with Sage’s Sea Moss. What I do know for certain is that we’ve only just begun!
